Standing With Communities in Times of Crisis: Flood Relief 2024

When disaster strikes, Rotary does not stand back—we step forward.

In 2024, devastating floods displaced families, destroyed livelihoods, and left thousands across Kenya in urgent need of food and basic necessities. In response, the Rotaract Club of Nairobi Parklands, working closely with our Mother Club and partners, mobilized quickly to support affected communities.

Through a collaborative effort with the Rotary Mother Club, the Sunrise Walkers from Parklands Sports Club, and the Kenya Red Cross, we participated in the fundraising, procurement, and distribution of food supplies valued at over KES 30 million. This initiative was not just about numbers—it was about restoring dignity, hope, and reassurance to families facing immense hardship.

The Kenya Red Cross played a critical role in guiding needs assessments, logistics, and last-mile delivery, ensuring that food reached the most vulnerable households efficiently and transparently. Our role as Rotaractors was hands-on and heart-led: mobilizing resources, coordinating with partners, and supporting distribution efforts on the ground.

What made this effort especially powerful was the spirit of partnership. Different organizations, united by a shared purpose, worked hand in hand—proof that when communities come together, impact multiplies. The Sunrise Walkers brought energy and commitment, our Mother Club provided leadership and structure, and Rotaract offered youthful drive and operational support.

This flood response reaffirmed a core Rotary truth: service is most meaningful when it meets people where they are, especially in moments of crisis. Beyond food parcels, this initiative reminded affected communities that they were not alone—and reminded us, as Rotarians and Rotaractors, why we serve.

As climate-related disasters become more frequent, Rotary’s role in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery is more important than ever. We remain committed to standing with communities, strengthening partnerships, and translating compassion into action.

Service Above Self is not just a motto—it is a responsibility we proudly carry.
