Planting Trees, Growing Inclusion: Rotary Celebrates Mazingira Day in Parklands

On 10th October 2025, Mazingira Day, our Rotary family came together for a tree planting event that went beyond environmental conservation to celebrate inclusion, dignity, and the power of community.

Held at Kestrel Manor Special Needs School in Parklands, the project focused on children and individuals living with autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. In a powerful act of environmental stewardship, we planted 550 trees, affirming Rotary’s commitment to both people and the planet.

What made this Mazingira Day truly special was not just the number of trees planted, but who we planted them with. The event intentionally centered persons living with special needs, ensuring they were not spectators but active participants; planting, watering, laughing, and leading alongside Rotarians, Rotaractors, and partners.

This impactful day was made possible through strong collaboration. We were proud to work alongside:

  • Kenya Airways
  • National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD)
  • Ready Aiders Foundation
  • The Millennial Environmentalists
  • Our mother club, Rotary Club of Nairobi Parklands
  • And other committed partners who believe in inclusive service

The atmosphere was joyful and uplifting. One of the most memorable moments came when the winners of Mr. and Miss Autism took center stage, confidently cat-walking and inviting everyone to join them in a celebratory “train walk.” In that moment, barriers dissolved—there was no distinction between ability or disability, only shared laughter, applause, and unity.

The event reminded us that environmental action and social inclusion are deeply connected. A greener future must also be a fairer and more compassionate one, where everyone has a place and a voice.

As Rotarians, we believe in creating lasting change—change that restores ecosystems, empowers communities, and affirms human dignity. This Mazingira Day was a living expression of Service Above Self, proving that when we plant trees together, we also plant seeds of belonging, confidence, and hope.

Together, we continue to grow a world that works for everyone—rooted in care, inclusion, and Rotary values. (Become a Member)
