Turning the Long Rains into Lasting Impact: Planting 2,500 Trees Across Kenya

In Kenya, the long rains from March to May are more than a season—they are an opportunity.

As Rotarians and Rotaractors committed to environmental stewardship, we are taking advantage of this vital window to plant 2,500 trees across the country, transforming rainfall into long-term ecological and community impact. This nationwide tree-planting initiative reflects Rotary’s growing commitment to environmental conservation and climate action. (View more images)

A Collective Effort Across Rotary

This initiative is designed as a collaborative effort with fellow Rotary and Rotaract clubs, bringing together members who believe that climate action is most powerful when done together. Through joint planning and hands-on planting, Rotary members will be directly involved in restoring landscapes, supporting communities, and building a culture of environmental responsibility.

Partnering for Innovation: The Millennial Environmentalists

Our key partners in this initiative are The Millennial Environmentalists, a youth-led conservation organization championing the #StopSeedAbortion model—an innovative, circular approach to tree growing that redefines waste as a resource.

Under this model:

  • Seeds discarded from fruits are collected and rescued
  • Waste plastics such as milk and bread packaging are repurposed as planting containers
  • Seedlings are nurtured in a sustainable, low-cost nursery system

This approach not only reduces waste but also lowers the cost of tree production while promoting environmental consciousness at the household and community level.

Sustaining Impact Through the Hummingbird Nursery

Seedlings grown through the #StopSeedAbortion model are nurtured at the Hummingbird Nursery, a social enterprise that ensures long-term sustainability of the initiative. Once mature, the trees are either:

Donated to community projects, schools, and environmental initiatives, or (Donate)

Sold to generate income that sustains nursery operations and future tree-growing efforts

This self-sustaining model ensures that tree planting does not end with a single season but continues year after year.

Beyond Tree Planting

This initiative goes beyond the act of planting trees. It is about:

  • Encouraging responsible waste management
  • Engaging youth and communities in climate action
  • Promoting sustainable livelihoods through green enterprise
  • Strengthening Rotary partnerships around environmental stewardship

Each tree planted during the long rains represents hope—for healthier ecosystems, resilient communities, and a greener future.

Looking Ahead

As the rains fall, so will seeds of change. With the support of Rotary members across the country and innovative partners like The Millennial Environmentalists, we are committed to ensuring that every tree planted survives, grows, and serves its purpose.

Together, we are proving that small actions, when multiplied through partnership, can create lasting environmental impact.
